According to Marc Stein, former Mavs guard J.J. Barea is finalizing a buyout of his contract with the Timberwolves. He is also reporting that the Mavericks are planning on signing Barea after he clears waivers.
In order to sign Barea the Mavs must clear a roster spot, which would probably mean trading or releasing Gal Mekel.
Barea played the first five years of his career for the Mavs, which culminated with him playing a key role on the 2011 championship team. He signed a four year deal after the 2011 lockout with the Wolves, with this being the final year of that contract.
No word yet on if Brian Cardinal is also planning on a return to the Mavs.
